Have you ever been driving down the road and spotted a blue book collection bin labeled “Discover Books”? You may have seen these drop-off boxes throughout New England, often outside convenience stores, your local transfer station, or libraries. What you may not know is that these familiar book donation bins are now part of Bay State Book Company. If you are searching for where to donate books in New England, these Discover Books bins are now part of the Bay State Book Company network.

Through the transition of Discover Books’ Collection Bins, Bay State Books has expanded its ability to keep books in circulation, support literacy initiatives, and provide responsible book recycling solutions for communities, libraries, and organizations across the region. While the Discover Books name may still appear on the bin, the mission remains the same: give every book the opportunity for a second life.

Bay State Books Builds on Discover Books to Expand Donation Options

The change from Discover Books to Bay State Books was more than a new name on the bins or trucks that do pick-ups. It strengthened and expanded donation services for communities throughout Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and other New England areas.

Libraries who once relied on Discover Books can now count on Bay State Book Company for regular pick-ups for leftover book sale items, weeding sessions, and patron donations. The service remained consistent, with simply a new phone number and continued commitment. For communities across Connecticut, Rhode Island, and the rest of New England, this transition has created even more opportunities to donate books with confidence, knowing they will be reused or responsibly recycled. Expanding the role of reuse remained a top priority.

Bay State Books acknowledges the need of individuals looking to declutter their homes, families cleaning out a loved one’s house after a move, and organizations that simply have more books than they can manage. That need exists in every community and did not disappear when Discover Books closed its doors. Continuing Discover Books’ mission to “Let the Stories Live On” became essential.

We are proud to carry that mission forward throughout New England, ensuring books that can still be enjoyed reach new readers, and those that cannot be loved further are kept out of landfills through responsible recycling.

How Bay State Books Reuses and Recycles Donated Books

When you donate books to Bay State Books, they truly get a second chance at life.

Some books are resold, providing affordable secondhand book options that help families build home libraries, support educators, and allow book lovers to grow their collections without stretching their budgets. Others are donated back into the community to support literacy programs and educational initiatives.

For books that are too worn to be reused, we ensure they are responsibly recycled. To date, Bay State Books has saved over 50 million books from landfills, and that number continues to grow every day. Each time someone calls Bay State Books for a pick-up or drops books into one of our bins, more books are kept in circulation and out of the waste stream.

What Types of Books Does Bay State Books Accept?

Those drop-off boxes you may still see labeled “Discover Books” accept the same items we accept in our regular “Bay State Books” bins. The short answer? We accept all books.

spine of 9 older books stacked up

Hardcover or paperback, fiction or nonfiction, textbooks, biographies, children’s books, board books, classics, self-help, travel guides, cookbooks, sheet music — if it has pages and something to share, we will take it. We also accept DVDs and CDs.

Gently used? Perfect. Worn and torn? We will recycle responsibly. There is no need to sort or stress before donating. If you are wondering whether it belongs in the bin, chances are it does.

Continuing Mission of Bay State Books

As Bay State Books continues Discover Books’ mission throughout New England, the goal remains simple: keep books moving. Whether you are cleaning out a shelf, managing a library’s overflow, or dropping a box of books into one of our bins, you are helping stories find new readers and keeping valuable materials out of landfills. Every donation matters. Every book has potential. And together, we can make sure the stories live on.
